The Seed Savers' Handbook

(Michel & Jude Fanton)

This was my bedtime reading for a long time, and I still use it regularly, to find out ALL the uses of a particular vegetable, herb or fruit, from the expected to the obscure. Each plant described has details on how best to save its seed, as well as varieties to look out for and cultivation hints.

You can read about it and order it from Seedsavers here.

The Complete Book of Fruit Tree Growing in Australia

(Louis Glowinski)

This is THE reference for anyone putting in either a basic apricot tree or choosing the right Sapote to try to grow in Melbourne (White, by the way, according to Louis, with the virtues of different varieties discussed)

Introduction to Permaculture

(Bill Mollison with Reny Mia Sla)

Even in the urban setting we can take many of these excellent ideas from the father of permaculture into our gardens. If you are lucky enough to have 5 acres or so, then this is part of your self-sufficiency library, and you will probably be using the larger tomes he has written with David Holmgren. This is a good starter...

The Australian Fruit and Vegetable Garden

(Clive Blazey and Jane Varkulevicius)

A great reference for the various climatic zones in Australia, and what to plant where, and when. Although brief, each plant has very good notes and a wide range of plants are covered.

Animal, Vegetable, Miracle - Our Year of Seasonal Eating

(Barbara Kingsolver)

Whilst not strictly a text, it contains a huge amount of recipes for seasonal eating, which can also be accessed on their website. Although set in the United States, the issues this book raises and the statistics given are still relevant in Australia, as we have similar lifestyles. This is truly food for thought.
